The 24
Tirthankaras
Ford-Makers
The 24 Ford-Makers who emerge in each cosmic cycle to bridge the ocean of suffering, illuminating the path to liberation for all sentient beings.
The Infinite Horizon of Time
"As the wheel of time turns, so do the souls of the enlightened return to guide us across the ford of rebirth."
In Jain cosmology, time is an infinite wheel with two half-cycles: Utsarpini (ascending) and Avasarpini (descending). In each half-cycle, exactly 24 Tirthankaras manifest. They are not gods, but human beings who have achieved absolute knowledge through rigorous meditation and renunciation, establishing a ford (tirtha) for others to cross into Nirvana.

From Crowns to Calm: The Royal Lineage
Every Tirthankara is born into the Kshatriya (warrior/royal) caste. They were kings, princes, and heirs to vast empires. Their journey is one of supreme sacrifice — they did not renounce poverty, but absolute worldly power and luxury.
This transformation from a ruler of men to a ruler of the self (Jina) serves as the ultimate example for all followers. True sovereignty is found not in the conquest of kingdoms, but in the conquest of one's own passions and karmic attachments.
